Kate Barry, Patriot Scout
On November 29, 1752, Margaret Catherine (Kate) Moore was born in Anson, South Carolina.
In 1767, when Kate was 15 years old, she married 21 year old Captain Andrew Barry. Over the next 25 years they would go on to have 12 children.
Kate is the 2nd cousin 8x removed of my son, through his father's side.
In 1775, when the American Revolutionary War started, Andrew joined Patriot forces. Kate used her horse riding skills to serve as a scout and military recruiter for the Patriots.
Labeled as an intelligence agent for American forces, Kate was in constant danger of capture by Loyalists or British troops.
She was captured once and was beaten by British soldiers. She never betrayed the location of her husband's troops.
In January of 1781, Kate rode around South Carolina to recruit more soldiers as Patriot forces worked to end the British occupation of the colony.
Her recruitment efforts helped the Patriots in their victory at the Battle of Cowpens, which boosted morale of the Patriot forces and permanently diminished British troop strength in South Carolina.
