Nancy Hart: Wife, Mother, and Patriot Spy...?
When the Revolutionary War came to Georgia, Ann Morgan Hart (nicknamed Nancy) was ready! She began spying on British troops. It is said that she would disguise herself as a "madman" and would wander through the British camps. She apparently threw boiling water over a Loyalist soldier who was snooping in her house - apparently trying to acquire information.
Nancy was born around 1735 and, in her thirties, married Benjamin Hart. They had eight children together.
At the beginning of the war, Benjamin left home to serve in the militia while Nancy stay home (in Georgia).
"Standing six feet tall with bright red hair, Nancy was know as 'wahatche', or 'war woman,' by her Cherokee neighbors."
Notably, "Nancy stole firearms from six British soldiers who came to her home, asking for food and drink. With the help of her 12 year old daughter, she was able to protect herself from the soldiers, killing one who rushed at her. The remaining five were later hung from a nearby tree."
Nancy, known post-war as "Nancy the Heroine" (as shown below) died in her nineties. She passed away in Kentucky in 1830.
Of her eight children, she had a son named Samuel (born 1755). From his line (and a few generations down), you get me! Nancy Hart - wife, mother, patriot, and my 7th great-grandmother!
